Phenolic c is a fabricated reinforced laminate produced from a fine weave Linen/Cotton cloth impregnated with a phenolic resin binder. The fine weave phenolic linen yields good mechanical properties, dimensional stability and a better finish for machined components than the CE material, particularly for intricate detailed components. However, it is not recommended for electrical primary insulation! Other benefits include high tensile, compressive and flexural strength, good resistance and strong electrical properties. LE phenolic meets Mil-I-24768/13 FBE requirements. It is available in sheet stock, rod, angle and U channel forms.

While LE phenolic material is hard and dense, it is also relatively light - LE phenolic sheets are about half the weight of aluminum sheeting. Despite its lightness, the material features a high strength-to-weight ratio. The material's moisture rate is 1.3 percent and it can withstand temperatures of up to 285°F. LE phenolic machining is also a relatively clean and easy process that is amenable to customization.

Micarta ® Phenolics

Micarta® is an industrial laminate that is widely regarded as the premium phenolic thermoset material. Micarta® is produced through the application of pressure or heat to synthetic resin-impregnated cloth material that is comprised of layered paper or glass. This results in a hard, dense phenolic sheet stock. The various types of Micarta® phenolic material include:

  • Canvas reinforced: Offers good impact and mechanical strength at a continous operating temperature of up to 250°F.
  • Linen reinforced: Ideally suited for complex, high strength parts and components, while providing good mechanica; and electrical strength.
  • Nylon reinforced: Features exceptional electrical properties under humid conditions along with strong anti-fungal characteristics.
  • Paper reinfored: Extremely tough laminate material offering excellent flexural, compressive and tensile strength.

Various grades of CE Phenolic and Garolite® Phenolic material are also available. The primary difference between Micarta® and Garolite® lies in their physical composition. While Micarta® is reinforced with canvas, linen, nylon or paper, Garolite® contains fiberglass. Both are extremely tough, moisture-resistant materials. They’re also available in a variety of colors for applications where aesthetic appeal is important.

CE Phenolics

CE phenolic is a fabricated reinforced laminate produced from a medium weave cotton cloth impregnated with a phenolic resin binder. The medium weave canvas yields good mechanical properties. However, it is not recommended for electrical primary insulation applications. CE phenolic meets Mil-I-24768/14 FBG requirements. It is available in sheet stock, rod, angle and U channel forms.

This cotton-canvas type material is frequently used in the manufacturing of pulleys, rollers, gears and guides. It also serves as electrical insulation in control boards. In addition to its good mechanical properties and toughness, CE phenolic offers high impact strength and exhibits good wear resistance; it is less abrasive than fiberglass when used in wear resistance applications. As with LE phenolic, this material can withstand temperatures of up to 285°F. CE phenolic machining is also a fairly easy procedure.

XX Phenolics (NEMA)

NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) designated laminates are unclad materials comprised of different resin systems, some incorporating woven glass weave, non-woven and some none at all. Each laminate exhibits unique electrical, mechanical and chemical performance characteristics and have specific uses based on these criteria. These laminates can be fabricated into components a variety of uses in the Aerospace, Automotive, Electronic, Industrial and Petroleum Industries. Lighter than metal but dense and strong, this paper-based material absorbs less moisture than impact resistant CE Garolite. Sometimes called paper-grade industrial laminate, phenolic, or Bakelite, it is often used for gasketing and gears. All meet MIL-I-24768/11. Available in sheets, strips, and rods also meet UL 94HB for flame retardance.

XX phenolic material has the ability to fend off corrosion and is resistant to friction, abrasion, metal fatigue and many types of chemicals. NEMA XX can withstand temperatures of up to 257°F and features an impact strength of ASTM D732): .055 ft. lb/in. of notch. As with LE and CE phenolic, NEMA XX machining can be executed quickly and easily.

    If die cutting makes more sense for your manufacturing operation, American Micro Industries offers extensive die custom die cutting capabilities for thin Phenolic sheet stock under 0.005" thick. These are not recommended to steel rule die cut or rotery die cut because it cracks and splinters. Laser cutting is the best option for these materials. Options include rotary and steel rule LE and CE phenolic die cutting, as well as technologically advanced laser cut phenolics that can often provide the most effective alternative for high-precision or complex components.

    • Rotary die cutting: Rotary CE, Nema XX or LE phenolic die cutting uses a rotary tool to cut or perforate phenolic sheet stock into the preferred shape. Rotary die cutting offers maximum speed and consistency during high-volume production runs.
    • Steel rule die cutting: Steel rule die cutting is a popular, inexpensive technique for trimming phenolic parts and components. It’s also an extremely cost-effective method for punching custom shapes out of the various types of phenolic material.
    • Laser die cutting: Laser cut phenolics can produce a wide range of complex shapes. It’s normally the best die cutting option for high-precision parts and components. Because laser die cutting does not require hard tooling, it is an excellent choice when a fast development of prototypes is required.
