Die Cut Foam Material Options
There are two main choices when it comes to foam packaging.
Closed cell products are more rigid and durable, whereas open cell materials are softer and lighter. Some of the more popular options include:
Polyethylene: This is a closed cell packaging material that offers durability and resilience. Polyethylene is a material of choice when shipping heavy, fragile items such as large appliances. It provides chemical and moisture resistance, as well as vibration dampening. It is also easy to cut and shape.
Expanded Polystyrene Foam: EPS — known more commonly by the trade name Styrofoam® — this material is cost-effective without sacrificing strength or moisture resistance. It also offers insulative and shock absorbing properties. Common applications include foam trays and liners, packaging, inserts and coolers. EPS is recyclable, making it an environmentally friendly option, as well.
Polyurethane Foam: This soft open cell material cradles lightweight, delicate parts and products. Available in multiple densities to suit different applications, it’s abrasion-resistant and easy to work with. Some grades of polyurethane foam have anti-static properties, which makes them a good choice for shipping and packaging electronics that can be damaged by electric shock.
The above are just three of the various packaging foams available today. Choosing the right product requires a careful consideration of multiple factors, including how delicate your product or part is and how it will be shipped and handled as it moves through the supply chain. Temperature conditions, exposure to shock and vibration and your budget will all play a role, too.
