Poron® Machining

Poron® is a microcellular urethane foam that can be laser cut or machined for use in a range of applications. It offers multiple benefits over competing products and is a good choice for demanding applications. However, like all microcellular materials, it must be handled and cut properly to be effective. For this reason, it’s critical to work with a fabricator who knows how to laser cut Poron® foam.

American Micro Industries offers more than two decades of fabrication expertise. We use sophisticated tools that can safely and accurately cut Poron® and other foam materials according to your specifications.

About Poron®

Poron® products are known for their compression set and overall resilience. Different varieties offer different properties and levels of compressibility, ranging from very soft (Poron® 4701-30) to very firm (Poron® 4701-60). Other products include the Poron® AquaPro™ line, which offers better sealing against water ingress, and Poron® XRD foam, a heavy duty option designed for maximum impact protection.

Poron® foam is low-outgassing and non-fogging, and contains no residual chemicals that can cause contamination or corrosion. It’s also inherently flame retardant, and many varieties meet UL HBF and MVSS 302 specifications.

Working With Poron®

American Micro Industries can shape Poron® materials in either of two ways:

  • Laser Cutting: Laser cutting is fast, repeatable and accurate to up to 10 micrometers. Laser cutting Poron® creates a clean edge that often requires no further processing for use.
  • CNC Machining: We can also shape Poron® using a variety of CNC machines. Our facility includes a range of spindles and cutters that are effective on urethane foam materials.

We can work from your diagrams or AutoCAD files to program complex shapes and contours that get the job done with fewer passes, saving you time and money. For more information about our technical capabilities, please contact American Micro Industries directly.

Applications

Laser cut or machined Poron® has a many potential applications. Poron® is used in communications and automotive products, as well as electronics and other consumer goods. It’s also an excellent choice for gasket manufacturing thanks to its flexibility and strength. Firmer grades of Poron® can be used for energy management in enclosure gasket applications. The ShockSeal™ product line is specially engineered for use in larger LCDs that require advanced cushioning and insulation systems.
