Hypalon® Laser Cutting

Hypalon® is a very strong elastomer whose scientific name is chlorosulfonated polyethylene synthetic rubber. It is used for a number of applications that require highly durable fabrics, including applications that could benefit from a lighter, tougher alternative to neoprene.

American Micro Industries has been very successful fabricating Hypalon® parts through laser cutting. Hypalon® laser cutting allows us to create very precise shapes in this fabric with virtually completely clean edges. By directing the beam with CNC technology, we can vaporize the fabric at the cutting point to leave you with a smooth edge all around.

If you’re seeking a company that can fabricate parts made of Hypalon® quickly, accurately and efficiently, there is no substitute for a company with high-tech laser cutting equipment and years of experience like American Micro Industries.

About Hypalon®

Hypalon® is a versatile fabric created by DuPont that is popular for many applications due to its high resistance to heat, cold, ultraviolet light and hazardous chemicals. It is popular for military use because it is radar-invisible and is lightweight and moisture-resistant while still being quite strong.

Working With Hypalon®

American Micro Industries is uniquely capable of working with Hypalon® due to our high-tech CNC laser cutting capabilities. By programming in your design specifications with CorelDRAW, AutoCAD or a similar program, our lasers can easily cut Hypalon® with accuracy of up to 10 micrometers for consistent, clean, accurate shapes.

You may find other companies who are aware of or work with Hypalon® fabric but do not have the Hypalon fabric laser cutting capabilities of American Micro Industries. As a result, your pieces may come out with inaccuracies, or it could take an incredibly long time for those companies to fill your orders.

As with all of our machining and cutting equipment, we have taken steps to make sure our Hypalon laser cutting capabilities are state-of-the-art and optimized. We pride ourselves in being able to fabricate parts out of every major material, which includes Hypalon laser cutting.

If you're concerned that a particular Hypalon part you need may be too complicated for our capabilities at AMI, we urge you to contact us and let us know. We can almost certainly put our Hypalon laser cutting equipment to work for you. We will work with you to develop a plan for your Hypalon product, keeping you informed every step of the way.

Applications for Hypalon®

Because of its multiple resistances and radar-transparency, Hypalon® is extremely popular for military applications. Because it is lightweight, it is often used to make vests and other military attire. This high-performance, highly durable fabric is also popular for such applications as rafts, outdoor gear and equipment, snowshoes, containment suits and more.

Hypalon has also become extremely popular in industries like plumbing and HVAC for their use in making durable, watertight gaskets and seals.

While neoprene is often used in gasket or seal construction, many prefer Hypalon®because of its superior UV light resistance. Naturally, Hypalon’s® other qualities — like its wide range of resistance to temperature extremes, its excellent elongation and tensile strength properties and its resistance to chemicals, fire, abrasion, oil and most weather conditions — also make it quite well-suited for making gaskets and seals, as well as weather stripping and related products.

Naturally, you can use Hypalon®to make more than just military attire and seals, gaskets and the like. The construction industry uses Hypalon® for everything from roofing membranes to reservoir covers. The automotive industry uses it for not only gaskets but also for timing belts that will be subjected to extreme heat, hoses, tubes and power steering components. Wire and cable providers use Hypalon for jacketing and insulating their cables, among other uses. Hypalon® is indeed a unique and multifaceted material if cut correctly.

Many applications where you would use neoprene in the past are now looking at Hypalon® as a strong alternative. If you need a strong, lightweight fabric that is suitable for almost any conditions, you may wish to consider Hypalon®.

If you are intrigued by the idea of Hypalon®but aren't sure if it's the right material for your industry or your business — or if you're curious about the best applications for Hypalon® for your industry — give us a call so we can discuss it. One of our fabrication experts will be happy to talk to you about all the possibilities of Hypalon® and how our Hypalon® fabric laser cutting abilities can help you reach your goals.
