A Guide to Phenolic Electrical Insulation Materials

Phenolic electrical insulation materials have been used for decades because they offer a dependable combination of electrical insulation, mechanical strength, and long-term durability. Made from reinforced laminates bonded with phenolic resin, these thermoset materials are designed to withstand demanding environments while providing excellent dielectric, thermal, and mechanical properties. 

Rather than referring to a single material, phenolic describes a family of electrical insulation materials that includes grades such as LE, CE, XX, G10/FR4, G5/G9, G7, G11/FR5, GPO1, and GPO3. Each grade offers unique characteristics, making it important to select the right materials based on the application’s performance requirements and fabrication needs.

What Are the Main Types of Phenolic Electrical Insulation Materials?

Phenolic electrical insulation materials are available in several grades, each developed for different performance requirements and applications. Some phenolic materials are designed for highly detailed machined components, while others are better suited for electrical insulation panels, gears, structural components, or high-temperature environments. Selecting the right grade depends on factors such as the application’s electrical requirements, mechanical demands, operating environment, and fabrication method.

LE Phenolics

LE phenolics are manufactured from linen cotton cloth impregnated with a phenolic resin binder. Compared to CE phenolics, the finer linen weave provides a smoother finish and improved machining characteristics, making it an excellent choice for highly detailed machined components. 

In addition to its machining capabilities, LE phenolics offers good mechanical properties, dimensional stability, high tensile strength, and strong electrical properties. Because of its characteristics, it is commonly selected for precision components that require both durability and a quality surface finish. 

Common applications for LE phenolics include:

  • Panels
  • Terminal strips
  • Ball bearing retainers
  • Fine gears

CE phenolics are manufactured from a medium-weave cotton cloth impregnated with a phenolic resin binder. This construction provides good mechanical properties, toughness, and wear resistance, making it a dependable option for a variety of industrial and electrical applications. 

One advantage of CE phenolics is their balance of strength and machinability. It is less abrasive than fiberglass in wear applications and offers high impact strength, making it a practical material for components that experience repeated use. CE phenolics can also withstand operating temperatures up to 285°F.

Garolite® G10/FR4 

Garolite® G10/FR4 is one of the most widely used phenolic materials offered by American Micro Industries. This fire-resistant, glass-reinforced epoxy laminate is valued for its combination of mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and dependable electrical performance across a variety of industrial applications.

One of the reasons G10/FR4 is so versatile is its ability to maintain excellent dielectric strength in dry, wet, and high-humidity environments. It also meets UL 94 V-0 flammability standards and MIL-I-24768/27 GEE-F requirements, making it a reliable choice for applications where electrical insulation and durability are critical. 

Common applications for G10/FR4 include:

Other Garolite® Phenolic Materials

While G10/FR4 is one of the most recognized Garolite® materials, it is only one option within a larger family of phenolic laminates. American Micro Industries also machines several other Garolite®  grades, each designed to meet specific electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements. 

G5/G9

G5/G9 is a flame-resistant laminate made from glass cloth and melamine resin. It offers excellent arc resistance and electrical strength, making it a good choice for electrical applications. American Micro Industries machines G5/G9 for components such as switchboard panels, circuit breaker parts, and structural electrical components. 

G7

G7 is a glass-silicone laminate known for its electrical properties, heat resistance, and arc resistance. It performs well in both humid and dry environments and is commonly machined into electrical-grade insulation components and industrial insulation used in heating systems. 

G11/FR5

G11/FR5 is similar to G10/FR4 but offers improved heat resistance, allowing it to perform in continuous operating temperatures up to 275°F. Although it can be more difficult to machine, it is often selected for aerospace equipment, electrical equipment, cryogenic insulation, and other demanding applications.

GPO1

GPO1 is a glass-woven cloth and polyester resin laminate that provides good electrical and thermal properties for general-purpose applications. It is commonly machined into electrical insulation components and meets MIL-I-24768/4 standards. 

GPO3

GPO3 is an electrical-grade glass-woven cloth polyester resin laminate designed for high-voltage electrical applications. With a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating and excellent arc resistance, it is commonly used for switchgear barriers, supports, panels, and electrical insulators.
