Kiss Cutting

Kiss cutting involves making a shallow cut in the top layer of a laminated material. This leaves the upper portion of the laminate affixed to a liner but easy to remove in the manner of a sticker or stamp. This process is fast and efficient, can be done on a variety of materials and creates a finished product that can be rolled up for convenient storage and transport.

Kiss cutting is done using a die or laser. It requires a laminated material, whether it’s plastic, cork, felt, silicon or adhesive-backed paper. Depending on the material and the process employed, kiss cutting can offer high tolerances, excellent accuracy and fast turnaround times, even for large projects.

The main advantage of this type of machining is its ability to create products that can be easily removed from their backing layer when needed. Drawbacks to this process include the fact that it is, by nature, limited in scope, and can involve higher set-up costs on projects requiring prototyping or tool development.

Kiss Cutting vs. Die Cutting

So, do you need kiss cutting or traditional die cutting for your applications? Kiss cutting is a very specialized type of cutting, so in most situations, you will probably be using some other form of die cutting. Die cutting is used to cut into materials of a variety of thicknesses to create a desired part or shape.

Kiss cutting is specifically used to create a thin shape with a liner that will protect it until you’re ready to remove the shape to use it for your application. This precision cutting and protective liner make it ideal for not only stickers and labels, but also for closed cell sponges, gaskets, foam and similar parts and materials.

At American Micro Industries, we have the equipment and capabilities for both kiss cutting — when your gaskets and other parts wish to take advantage of the benefits this type of manufacturing provides — and for die cutting, when you need to cut into a thicker material and aren’t as worried about having a protective backing.
